In Las Vegas, Yuki Tsunoda managed to gain a few points for 9th place, while Liam Lawson only finished 16th, which clearly did not meet expectations. In Qatar he was asked what the main conclusions he and the RB team had drawn from the previous weekend.
Liam Lawson: “Unusually cold weather and such a significant change in surface conditions, as was the case in Las Vegas, do not occur at other circuits, at least not on such a scale. In every session we had to drive at the limit and of course we did not always manage to achieve the optimal behavior of the car.
Moreover, I made a costly mistake in qualifying, which meant I started from a worse position than I expected. And this greatly affected the nature of my race, because it was very difficult to earn this back. So after Las Vegas it is important to draw some conclusions.
We have a very specific goal: the team wants to finish the season in 6th place in the Constructors’ Championship. This is the most important thing now, and it means I also have to earn points. This is exactly what is expected of us.
To be honest, we didn’t perform well on the track in Qatar last year, but the car has changed a lot since then, the conditions this weekend are also completely different and I’m sure it will be much easier to adapt to them.
It seems to me that we are in a very good mood, especially since we will use here the same technical innovations that showed themselves well in Las Vegas. By the way, in theory the Abu Dhabi circuit should suit us well, because it has happened in the past and I hope it will happen again now.”
