Christian Danner, a former Formula 1 driver who has long worked as an expert with German TV channels, commented on the results of the Belgian Grand Prix, as well as a number of other topics that are relevant today.
Max Verstappen started at Spa from a distant 14th position, but the Red Bull Racing car was capable of such high speeds that Max took the lead on lap 12 and took the race to victory without any problems.
“A little more, and his superiority would still be too great. Verstappen is an excellent driver and in his own class, Danner told Sport1. – But personally I think the cars of other teams are already losing too much to Red Bull. I would prefer the battle to be more even and Max to fight for the title until the end of the season.
As for Lewis Hamilton, then of course the blame for the collision with Fernando Alonso rests entirely with him. He tried to overtake, after which he said he had not seen the Spaniard’s car, because it was in the blind zone. This is a very strange statement because he saw Fernando, went ahead of him and only then collided with him. How can you say he hasn’t seen something? ..”
Danner is also surprised by the controversy surrounding Oscar Piastri: “He must be contractually bound without any ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’, otherwise Alpine would not have invested millions of euros in this rider. There must have been a mistake in the contract – otherwise Piastri would not have dared refuse to work with the team.
But the question is: why doesn’t he want to ride for Alpine? This is only possible if someone else wants him released from obligations to this team, because she can borrow him elsewhere, where he can be locked up for several years, and all the while the road to the top teams will be closed to him.”
Danner also has his own opinion about Mick Schumacher’s future prospects: “In such cases it is worth remembering: it takes two to dance the tango. Mick sometimes made fun of the team, which caused the situation to spiral out of control. At the start of the season I said Mick should be friends with Haas F1, please the team in every way, because only there can he be offered a place in 2023.
While Mick would love to drive for McLaren, McLaren doesn’t need Mick Schumacher. There are other riders who are much more attractive. An experienced master is usually faster than a young driver – unless of course you are dealing with exceptional talents such as Piastri, Verstappen or Leclerc. I hope Mick can stay with Haas, otherwise he will struggle to continue his career.”
