Race columnist Scott Mitchell analyzes the difficult situation for Mick Schumacher in Haas F1, which could negatively impact his career…
The 2022 season could be a tough one for Mick Schumacher. When Kevin Magnussen was signed at the last minute after only halfway through pre-season testing, everyone said Mick had a great opportunity to gain experience from a more experienced driver who knew the team well and had some success in Formula 1.
But in addition, we got the chance to understand how good Mick really is. A rider is always compared to a teammate – and Magnussen has become a benchmark for Schumacher to aspire to. So far, Miku has not succeeded. He is far from Kevin’s high lap speed and makes mistakes in races.
This year the Haas F1 has a really competitive car that Magnussen shows off on the track. Kevin is getting good results for Haas and Schumacher is not yet at his level.
We’ve never seen anything like Guanyu Zhou’s Alfa Romeo performance in Mick’s first four 2022 Grands Prix. As Zhou is a debutant in Formula 1. Yes, Alfa Romeo seems to have a slightly better car than the Haas F1, but there were a few moments when you could say about Zhou that he is doing a great job. You can’t say that about Mika. I may be a bit strict in my assessments, but Schumacher didn’t impress at the start of the season.
