After finishing the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, which was won by Max Verstappen, Mercedes head Toto Wolff came to the pits of Red Bull Racing and congratulated Jos Verstappen, the racer’s father, on his success.
For Jos himself, the communication with Toto came as a surprise, and after the conversation he said that Wolff first spoke to him during the 2021 British Grand Prix, in which Max and Lewis Hamilton competed for leadership.
The German F1 Insider suggests Wolff has decided to revive ties with Jos Verstappen as he sees Max as a candidate to replace Lewis Hamilton if the seven-time world champion decides to withdraw from Formula 1. Although Verstappen’s current contract with Red Bull Racing runs until the end of 2028 describes the conditions under which Max can break it ahead of schedule and change the team. For example, if the results of Red Bull Racing fall sharply.
Helmut Marko confirms this, but assures Verstappen will not want to move to Mercedes: “There are indeed performance clauses in the contract that theoretically allow Max to leave. However, many factors have to play a role for this. Moreover, Max is still not a fan of Mercedes.”
