During a series of built stages in Spa, Saanfdort and Monza, Mercedes experimented by converting all 16 trailers carrying the team’s race cars and equipment to 100% renewable biofuels. Only to cover the last 20 kilometers did the trucks have to be filled with conventional diesel due to supply problems.
The tanks of the trailers are filled with the so-called HVO 100 fuel, which is extracted from vegetable and waste oils, fats and contains no fossil fuels. Using HVO 100 saved 44,091 kg of CO2 and reduced emissions by 89%.
Biofuels are already being used in motorsport – starting this season, Formula 1 cars will already be filled with E10 biofuel and a switch to 100% synthetic fuel is planned in 2026.
