Damon Hill: Testing is not the best way to pick a rider

This week, the Alpine team in Hungary held three days of private testing with Antonio Giovinazzi, Nyck de Vries and Jack Duane, choosing a potential candidate to replace Fernando Alonso next season. 1996 World Champion Damon Hill believes that a good test speed is no guarantee that the driver will achieve results in real races.

Damon Hill: “Testing is not the best way to test a rider whether he is a good fit for your team or not. A lot has to do with the atmosphere in the pits, with how the driver feels, with the way the mechanics and mechanical engineers communicate with him.

You can create an atmosphere where the rider feels like a real leader and shows a high pace. However, this rate can be easily misleading, especially on tests. It is impossible to estimate how fast the rider really is.

How many times have we come to winter testing and suddenly the Haas riders were the fastest. Does this mean they will win the title? None of that – as soon as we got to the first race of the season, everything fell into place.
