Fernando Alonso is positive about the team’s chances in Singapore. The Alpine rider is convinced that the novelties prepared for the stage will bring points.
Q: How do you rate the last European race of the season?
Fernando Alonso: The last few weeks in Europe have been tense – we were constantly on the road, so we are happy to be able to rest before the last away games of the season. The team scored 18 points in three races and had a strong race at Spa and Zandvoort. Unfortunately we had to stop in Italy, although we were hoping for an 11th consecutive points finish.
In Monza the car was not as fast as in previous weekends, so we tried to understand the reason. We hope to return to the usual level of competition in Singapore. The whole team has been working hard to get new items ready for this race, so I can’t wait to see what comes of it.
Q: How hard is it to race in Singapore?
Fernando Alonso: We are waiting for one of the most difficult races of the season. The heat and humidity make us sweat a lot and lose weight, so it’s important to diet and drink a lot. The track itself is long and requires an extreme degree of concentration.
It is great that we are returning to Singapore after a break of several years. It’s interesting how the new generation of cars will behave compared to the previous ones on this track.
Q: What do you think of the fight with McLaren for fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship?
Fernando AlonsoA: I think this fight will continue until the end of the season. On some points we were a few points behind, on others we were ahead. Our team has proven that when we have a clean weekend we are the “best of the rest” and try to overtake the top three teams.
Unfortunately we failed in Italy – I had to stop due to loss of coolant pressure and neither car earned any points. But we know consistency and teamwork are key to finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
