The author of the third “Washington” puck in the game was team captain Alexander Ovechkin, who hit an empty net. With that goal, the 37-year-old forward narrowed the gap to legendary Gordie Howe’s record for most goals for a club in the National Hockey League to two goals. Alexander scored 784 shots while Howe scored 786 goals for the Detroit Red Wings.
Of note, Ovechkin played exclusively for the Capitals throughout his North American League career. In turn, Howe scored another 15 goals in the Hartford Whalers, as a result of which Alexander de Gordy’s total backlog in the sniper list is 17 goals.
