Sunday night, April 2, will kick off the Western Conference Gagarin Cup final series. As has been the tradition of recent years, a ticket to the season finale will be decided in the Army Derby. SKA St. Petersburg and CSKA Moscow will begin to identify the strongest of the Western duel in the northern capital. So, by the way, it was a year ago, but the Muscovites won this series of 7 games. How will it be this time?
The Western Conference final between the two Army clubs has already become a classic of the Kontinental Hockey League. Since 2015, this is the seventh meeting between CSKA and SKA at this stage. It could have been the eighth, but as we remember, the Gagarin Cup was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And in 2017, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv prevented the classic confrontation from taking place, which at the stage of the conference semifinals knocked out the Moscow army men from the Gagarin Cup.
The stats of the final series mentioned are from CSKA’s side. The capital club have beaten SKA five times at this stage, unchanged since 2016. The Saint Petersburg military team have won only once, in 2015, in the already legendary final series. Recall that then CSKA led the series with the score 3:0, after which they lost 4 games in a row. Moscow army men’s winning streak consisted twice of 7 matches (2019, 2022), twice out of six (2018, 2021) and it was only in 2016 that CSKA beat the Dry Petersburgers. Interestingly, both times the conference final series between the two army clubs started in St. Petersburg, CSKA celebrated victory (2018 – 5:4 OT, 2022 – 3:1).
In the current Gagarin Cup, teams have made it to the conference finals in different ways. SKA in the first stage of the playoffs had to tinker with Dynamo Minsk (4:2). But on the other hand, in the Western semi-finals, the army team from St. Petersburg did not give the “Torpedo” from Nizhny Novgorod a chance (4:0). From the side of the capital club, both in the first round of the qualifiers and in the second, the Army Men of Moscow had to play 7 games in series. But, interestingly, in the decisive matches CSKA convincingly dominated its rivals: Severstal – 5: 3, Lokomotiv – 5: 0.
During the regular season of the current season, CSKA Moscow and St. Petersburg have played six matches against each other, with the same number of wins – three each. In home games, each of the teams won twice and lost once. SKA’s only advantage in these matches is the number of goals scored: 16 against 14.
