SKA St. Petersburg defender Artem Sergeev explained how important the match against his former club CSKA in the KHL was for him.
On Friday, CSKA lost to SKA at home in the KHL regular season match with a score of 2:3. Sergeev spent 23 minutes on the ice. The 30-year-old defender joined SKA in May this year. He spent 6 seasons with CSKA and won two Gagarin Cups (2022, 2023).
— How do you like the match?
— Good game, high pace. We had to endure it, which we did. We scored on our chances.
— Was the match against CSKA important for SKA and for you personally?
“I wouldn’t say that about myself.” But I won’t lie – of course the game turned out to be emotional for me. However, I had a lot of good time at CSKA. What is there to hide? And for the team as a whole it is a military derby, for example, like the battle between Salavat Yulaev and Ak Bars. The intensity is significantly higher than in other games.
— In the first minutes of the match, did you think about your former club?
– No, it’s purely emotional, a bit of cheek. You can’t go anywhere without it.
— SKA is at the level of the best clubs in the league in terms of goals conceded. But why are you only now getting back into the playoff zone?
— In general, we need to be more stable. We play good matches – for example, we lead 2:0 against Minsk, but we miss the victory. We should not offer matches like this. Defensively, we have to play even better. There are a lot of chances in front of our goal, but the goalkeepers clean them up. In this component we need to add exactly.
— Can we say that the victory over CSKA will inspire a good series for you?
– Yes, 100%. This should give us confidence, and the most important thing is not to give up. It’s very easy to lose her, and we already experienced that at the beginning of the season,” correspondent Sergeyev said.
After this victory, SKA returned to the playoff zone – the team ranks eighth in the Western Conference standings with 14 points.
