Former head coach of Spartak Fedor Kanareikin expressed his opinion on the possible return of the striker Ilya Kovalchuk at the Moscow club.
Since leaving Avangard in 2021 and winning the Gagarin Cup, Kovalchuk has not been on the ice at the professional level. He played for Spartak from 1999 to 2001.
— Kovalchuk’s return is entirely possible. He takes care of himself, controls himself and trains a lot. What is the probability? Only Ilya knows, and I think Zhamnov knows. If he feels strong, hungry and wants to play, then he must implement it.
Spartak is now having a good match, the team is taking shape. What place will Kovalchuk take? It is clear that this is a hockey player for the third or fourth line. We will have to look for a place in the top 6, perhaps in the majority team,” Kanareikin said, as quoted by Metaratings.ru.
At the professional level, Kovalchuk, 40, has won three Gagarin Cups, two World Championship gold medals and the 2018 Olympics.
