Russian defender Mikhail Sergachev recounted the details of the transition to Utah.
In late June, Tampa traded the 26-year-old hockey player to Utah, who will play in the NHL for the first time in the 2024/25 season.
— The first reaction is of course shock. I didn’t expect to be traded.
I was taking out the trash when the call came. I remember when Montreal traded me, they called me too. The feelings were similar.
I didn’t know anything about Utah. But then I talked to my agent, different players – they all spoke warmly about Utah and the new franchise. I talked to the coach, the general manager, and now I’m here, everything is great here – the city, the club. I’m very excited, it’s a great opportunity to prove that I can be a leader. I’m looking forward to this opportunity.
I was traded before the no-trade clause in my contract kicked in. So I had no choice (laughs), Sergachev said at a press conference.
Sergachev has been playing for Tampa since 2017. As a member of the Lightning, the Russian became a two-time Stanley Cup winner.
