Former hockey player joins coaching staff of Russian Chaika
Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine (IHU) launched the procedure of stripping the former hockey player and ex-employee of the FHU of sports and state awards Vyacheslav Zavalnyuk.
Zavalnyuk is reported to have joined the coaching staff of the Chaika club from Nizhny Novgorod, which plays in the Russian Youth Hockey League. The FHU condemned the former hockey player’s actions, noting that his appointment occurred the day after the Russian missile strike on the Okhmatdit, Isida and Adonis hospitals in Kyiv, which killed at least 34 people.
49-year-old Zavalnyuk is a former player of the Ukrainian national team, a participant in the 2002 Olympics. Among the awards that the FHU intends to strip the former hockey player of is the Order of Merit, 3rd degree, awarded in 2008.
Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia launched a missile attack and aerial bombardment on most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The Russian war against Ukraine is now in its 868th day.
