Athletistic/Hockey. The Columbus Blue Jackets press office has confirmed the tragic death of forward Johnny Gaudreau.

Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were riding their bikes when they were killed by a drunk driver.

“We are deeply shocked and devastated by this incredible tragedy. Johnny was not only an exceptional hockey player, but more importantly, a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Meredith, his children Noah and Johnny, his parents and all his family and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew.

Johnny played with a great joy that was transmitted to all who saw him on the ice. He spread his true love of hockey everywhere he played, from Boston College to the Calgary Flames, Team USA and the Blue Jackets. His game inspired fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could. The impact he had on our club and the game of hockey as a whole was significant, but it pales in comparison to the indelible mark he left on the hearts of all who knew him.

Johnny made our club his own when he joined us two years ago, and Columbus has returned the favor. We will miss him terribly and will do all we can to support his family and each other during this difficult time.

At this time, we ask everyone to pray for the Gaudreau family and respect their privacy during this time of mourning,” the Columbus Blue Jackets said in a statement.
