The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) will form an advisory committee to help hockey players better understand the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and the damage concussions can cause, reports ESPN .
NHLPA President Marty Walsh said the creation of the committee was unanimously approved at a meeting of the union’s board of directors.
— The NHLPA is forming a players’ committee that will focus on studying the effects of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The committee will be led by leading medical experts in the field, Walsh said.
Degenerative brain disease (CTE) has been identified in athletes and combat veterans who have suffered concussions or repeated blows to the head. The disease can only be diagnosed posthumously, by examining the brain.
