Athletistic/ Others. Russian chess player Grandmaster Sergei Karyakin has said that if he receives a summons he will not try to shirk his responsibility.
“Like many other Russian citizens, I can also receive a summons. If it happens, it will come. At least I’m not going to hide behind a chessboard. I’m from Crimea, it’s understandable that everyone is upset because everything is going on. I never said everything was fine, but I always support my country,” Karjakin said.
Sergey Karyakin is the world champion in rapid chess (2012), the world team champion in the Russian team (2013, 2019), the owner of the FIDE World Cup (2015), the world champion in blitz (2016).
In 2016, Karjakin won the Candidates Tournament and had the opportunity to play in the match for the title of World Chess Champion with the current holder of this title, the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen. Karjakin lost the 12-game match in a tie-break.
