Ukrainian boxer cares about legacy in sport, not prize money
Former world champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) said he was ready to fight the former WBO and WBC featherweight title holder Shakur Stevenson (19-0, 9 KOs) if championship belts are at stake.
“If he is the owner of four belts, no problem. I’m ready for it. For me, this is not a business. This is a historic moment for my history, the history of my life and our family.”
“I said before that we may lose business and money tomorrow, but we will never lose our heritage, our historical moment. This will forever remain in history. That is why I strive for this goal.
I had a chance in my life, but I didn’t take it. However, now I am approaching that possibility again. If I deserve it, I need another chance. But if not, no problem, life goes on.”
Stevenson defeated Robson Conceicao in his last fight. At the end of the fight, all three judges gave a confident advantage to Shakur – 117-109, 118-108 and 117-109. At the same time, on the eve of the fight, the American did not fit into the regulated weight, which is why he vacated the WBO and WBC titles in the second featherweight.
Recall that the Ukrainian boxer will return to the ring on October 29. Lomachenko’s fight with Jemaine Ortiz will take place at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York.
Lomachenko had his last fight in December last year, defeating Richard Commey by unanimous decision. Subsequently, Vasily could fight with George Kambosos, but refused it against the backdrop of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
