Male and female Russian national teams in volleyball may fall in the world rankings for the 2024 Olympics, but not by a large number of positions, the secretary general of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VVF) told Alexander Yaremenko.
Earlier, it was reported that the Russian men’s and women’s teams will not participate in the 2024 Olympics qualifying volleyball tournament due to the suspension of international competitions. Relevant information appeared on the website of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Later, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) press service told that the rating of the suspended Russian teams was “frozen”.
As of November 2, 2022, the Russian women’s team is in 8th place in the world rankings, the men’s team – 5th.
– The notation itself is such that it is frozen in quotation marks, one might say. The number of points of other teams from the non-participation of the Russian team in the competition does not change. The new rating was adopted in 2018 and has been in effect since 2019. If the team does not play matches, wins or loses, then the number of points in the rating remains the same,” Yaremenko told TV game.
– Do you expect the national team to be bypassed in the rankings in this case?
– If you look closely, we have not participated in some tournaments, and the ranking does not change. The national team will not be bypassed, the total number of points remaining the same for all teams.
It is therefore not possible to change places?
– Places may change, but the rating of the Russian team itself remains unchanged today. The team can go down, but not by many positions.
According to the volleyball tournament selection system, six teams will receive Olympic tickets based on the results of the qualifying tournament in the fall of 2023. A ticket was given to the French team as the host of the Olympic Games .
The remaining five Olympic places will be distributed among the top five teams in the FIVB World Ranking at the end of the 2024 Nations League Preliminaries in the following order of priority: 1. teams from continents without qualified teams; 2. best teams not yet qualified.
