Deputy of the State Duma and Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova in a conversation with a correspondent, she said she could understand the decision of the All-Russian Swimming Federation (VFTU) to ask the Asian federation about possible performances of national athletes under its auspices.
Earlier, a member of the Bureau of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and President of the FSM, Vladimir Salnikov, told about the call for the possibility of Russian participation in water sports in Asian tournaments.
– This decision is understandable, because our sport (skating) is now in competition with China. Now we have to look for opportunities for international competitions. Asia also has strong athletes, including swimmers. If our athletes have international competition experience in the Asian part of the continent, that is fine. And it’s a very good competition.
Subsequently, if everything goes well, it will be possible to separately gather around us people who will be ready to cooperate with us. Maybe then he will turn out to find something alternative, Zhurova told .
The Russians have been suspended from participating in competitions under the auspices of FINA amid the situation in Ukraine.
