‘Years of work to get back to World Athletics are over’ – VFLA chief

All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) President Petr Ivanov announced the completion of work to restore ARAF’s membership in the World Athletics Association.

The World Athletics Council on Thursday restored the status of the VFLA after 7.5 years, but extended the suspension of Russian athletes due to the situation in Ukraine.

– The years of work we spent to return to World Athletics are over. The complicated and painstaking work to restore our status was positively appreciated. ARAF employees and members of the Presidium, our athletes, coaches, regional federations and everyone who cares about the fate of Russian athletics took part in the work. The work brought together the World Athletics working group, international experts, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, the Russian Olympic Committee and RUSADA.

We will continue to operate a strict anti-doping policy in order to comply with all international requirements. Issues of the sports and anti-doping component of the federation’s work comply with international requirements, which are enshrined today by the decisions of the World Athletics Council, – the ARAF website quotes Ivanov.

International Federation President Sebastian Coe also said World Athletics has approved the creation of a working group that will deal with the issue of the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. It will be created in a few weeks.
