Maguchikh: A very weak position is to boycott the Olympics. If there are no Ukrainian athletes there, it will be a failure

The Ukrainian champion has no idea how Russian athletes will express their disagreement with the regime

Ukrainian athlete Yaroslav Maguchy commented possible boycott of the 2024 Olympicsif Russians and Belarusians are allowed to compete in international competitions.

“In fact, I think it is a very weak position to boycott the Olympics. We must do everything to prevent this from happening. Just do not refuse to speak at the Olympics. This is the biggest competition that everyone watches. If there are no Ukrainian athletes there, it will be a failure, honestly.”

“I really hope that we will be able to convey our opinion to the IOC and everyone else. What is happening now in our country, does not fit into the head. Many Russian athletes support this regime, many are afraid. But I don’t know how it will look like for them to sign some piece of paper that they do not support the war. If we are talking about athletics, they perform under the emblem of CSKA – this is support for the army, support for the genocide.

Earlier, Maguchikh commented on the possible return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions.

The IOC is ready to consider the possibility of admitting athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions. In this case, everyone who wishes will be required to act in a neutral status. Also, athletes should not support the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and pass a mandatory doping test.

The decision on the admission of athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus to international competitions and the 2024 Olympics should be made at the IOC Congress on March 28-30.
