Ukrainian woman recently resumed her career after the birth of her daughter
Former first racket of Ukraine Elina Svitolina told how she helping Ukraine during the war and shared my disappointment from the actions of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
“Ukrainians are deeply saddened by the war. People are afraid, people feel empty. What happened to Lesya is very sad. Those who don’t go through it, they can’t really understand what it’s like to be in that situation. When you don’t have a home, when you don’t have a place where you feel safe, when your family is under rocket attack in Ukraine, when you know that Ukrainian cities are being destroyed. It is both a great fear and a great emptiness.”
“The WTA should have done much, much more on many issues. Today it’s too late. There were so many statements from our side, so many interviews. Nothing helped. It’s been over a year now. We tried to fight for Ukraine. Right now I just want to be ready to ask pepper. Honestly, this WTA position is wearing me down. We listed the facts, we talked a lot with them to convince them. But they don’t care. They don’t want to hear anything. It turns into a waste of our energy with no result. Nothing changes. Therefore, we must continue to cope with everything alone. We have to go out on the court, do our job, find additional motivation. There is nothing else left for us.”
“I have these opportunities. To go to Ukraine, meet with the President, communicate with people who defend our country. And to be one of the voices of Ukraine that shares the history of my country with others, raises awareness among as many people as possible, reminds them how much we need help. I do my best with tennis. Since the beginning of the war, I have raised over a million dollars for Ukraine and for my foundation. I am on a mission for my country and my people.”
Recall that Svitolina did not perform for more than a year, preparing for the birth of her daughter. The Ukrainian played her first match after returning from maternity leave at a tournament in Charleston. Elina lost in three sets to Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan in the first round.
$100,000 was raised at a charity tournament in Charleston to help Ukraine. One of the organizers of the tournament was the Elina Svitolina Foundation.
