All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) President Petr Ivanov said that after World Athletics membership is restored, ARAF intends to settle the issue of inviting foreign athletes in its competitions.
On March 23, World Athletics, after 7.5 years, restored ARAF status, but extended the suspension of Russian athletes due to the situation in Ukraine.
– We will have the possibility of inviting foreign athletes to our competitions. By the end of the week, there will be an agreement. There is no clear position yet. We plan to create a student athletics league. Almost all sports have such leagues, so it will not be superfluous in athletics either. Many thanks to the ministry for helping to build the infrastructure with which it is possible to hold high-level competitions,” Ivanov said at a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and sports.
ARAF’s membership of World Athletics was suspended in November 2015 amid a large-scale doping scandal, Russian athletes were only allowed to compete internationally after being granted neutral status . In November 2022, Coe said the organization’s task force recommends reinstatement of ARAF status in March 2023.
In early March last year, World Athletics banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine.
