Monfils: The doctor said I should retire from Roland Garros because of a wrist problem

The French tennis player finished the first round duel with an injury

French tennis player Gael Monfils announced the withdrawal from Roland Garros 2023 due to injury.

“Physically, I’m fine. I was very happy in the morning. I woke up pretty well. But I had a problem with my wrist that I can’t solve.

“The doctor says that it was not good to play with such an injury. It was very risky before, but now he definitely said that I should stop.”

“On Thursday I go to the scan to find out the exact time of the pause. It will be several weeks, maybe faster or a little longer. If it was a complete break, it would be more serious. On Thursday I will know more about recovery time, but the doctor told me that he hopes I can play on the grass.

Monfils was injured in the first round duel with the Argentinean Sebastian Baez. It is reported that the Frenchman finished the match through pain, and already came to the press conference with a bandage on his wrist.

Gael later attended the match of his wife, Elina Svitolina, in the second round of the 2023 WG. The Ukrainian woman said that she also supported her husband, but watched the match on TV in the hotel room.
