Russian-born volleyball player Ekaterina Antropova has joined the Italian national team for the upcoming European Championship, reports the press service of the Italian National Olympic Committee (KONI).
Earlier, the Chigi government palace press service reported that Italy granted citizenship to Antropova living in the country. The athlete received citizenship through “special merit”. The President of the National Olympic Committee of Italy, Giovanni Malago, proposed to activate this procedure.
In the European Championship, the Italian team will play in group B with the teams of Romania, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the Croatian national team.
The competitions will take place from August 15 to September 3.
The 20-year-old athlete was born in Iceland to a Russian family. Now the volleyball player plays for the Italian club Savino Del Bene. In 2017, Antropova was part of the extended Russian national team among players under the age of 16.
