The rival of Isinbayeva, who beat the Russian at the 2012 Olympics, has announced her retirement from the sport

US Olympic track and field champions Jennifer Sur (pole vault) and Michelle Carter (shot put) have announced their retirement from professional sport.

“Soon I will be able to find the right words, but my heart and soul are definitely ready for the next stage of my life. Pole vaulting has given me everything I could ever wish for, I never dreamed of such a thing, Sur, 40, wrote on social media.

The American won gold at the 2012 Olympics, as well as silver at the 2008 Games. At competitions in London, she beat the Russian Elena Isinbayeva , which eventually became the third. Sur still holds the fastest indoor time (5.02m) recorded at the 2013 U.S. Nationals.

“This year is my 25th season and I can’t believe I’ve had such a long and wonderful career. But I feel like it’s time for me to move on. A bit bitter because that was part of my life,” Carter, 36, said in a video posted to social media.

Carter won the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
