Quadruple world champion in synchronized swimming Alexander Maltsev said athletes whose performance involves musical accompaniment should not be prohibited from using foreign works.
On Saturday, during the skating trials of the Russian figure skating team, the country’s vice-champion Pyotr Gumennik performed a short program from last season. Earlier, during a master class at Tamara Moskvina’s club, he presented his program to the music of the German group Rammstein, which they performed for him this season. After his performance at Megasport, Gumennik told reporters that he was prohibited from skating a new short program to the song Rammstein. Later it turned out that this happened because of a letter sent to the Russian Ministry of Sports and the Federation of All Winter Sports.
“We have not yet received such letters.” Nobody forces us to use certain music. We are already forced to very strict limits due to the new rules. If we were also forced to use a certain musical accompaniment, then it would be completely sad, because now we are already forced to sacrifice the artistic side of our programs, since we are trying to acquire the famous “complexity”, which is far from being such if we look at the elements that must be related to modern trends.
This year we plan to show two new solos. The technical program has already started. The free solo will therefore also be new, but the one under “Queen” will probably remain only for demonstration purposes, as it is longer than the required time. Additionally, this doesn’t quite follow the new rules: now complex items are cheap and lightweight items are expensive. Forced to look for something new.
We take the music that we deem necessary so that it reflects the image we wish to convey. In our opinion, there should be no limits or barriers when choosing musical accompaniment. We hope that this will remain the case in the future,” Maltsev told .
