The Juventus midfielder will also pay a fine of 12,500 euros
Midfielder Juventus Nicolo Fagioli officially disqualified for 12 months for engaging in illegal betting.
The sentence is divided into two parts. Seven months (until the end of the 2023/24 season) the midfielder will miss completely, yet five months replaced with alternative instructions. The footballer must pay a fine of 12,500 euros.
An alternative sentence for Fagioli will be a six-month rehabilitation course for gambling addiction. According to the therapeutic plan, the player will be required to take part in at least 10 social meetings in special rehabilitation centers. The federal prosecutor’s office will monitor compliance with the terms of the alternative orders.
Fagioli was under investigation for involvement in gambling through illegal online platforms. The midfielder admitted guilt and made a deal with the prosecutor’s office, which allowed him to avoid a more severe punishment.
The Italian Olympic Committee’s Code of Sports Justice prohibits professional football players from directly or indirectly betting on events held under the auspices of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), UEFA and FIFA.
In addition to Fagioli, Italian police have identified a number of other players who are suspected of participating in illegal betting. In particular, Newcastle and Italy national team midfielder Sandro Tonali admitted his involvement in illegal gambling and intends to undergo psychotherapy.
22-year-old Fagioli is a graduate of the Juventus primavera, who made his way to the base of the Turin club in the fall of 2022. In total, the central midfielder played 45 matches for the Old Lady, scored three times, and completed 6 assists. In November last year, Fagioli made his debut in the first Italian national team.
