In the second half, the blue-yellows appeared as a completely different team
Coach of the Ukrainian national team Sergey Rebrov summed up the results of the meeting with Iceland (2:1), in which the Ukrainian team won the right to participate in the 2024 European Championship.
“In my opinion, we controlled the game. Unfortunately, we missed the first goal, but we created chances and understood how we wanted to win. Iceland goal? This is not interesting for me yet. Let’s analyze this episode. Unfortunately, we missed it. But what is important for me is how we reacted to this mistake: we tried to go forward, created chances. I think we won the game.”
“During the break, we adjusted our actions somewhat, but it is very important that the players themselves were dissatisfied with the game they showed. They spoke in high tones – maybe that helped. Everyone understood the price of this victory. What we did in the second half is a credit to everyone who was in the locker room.”
“I don’t know how it happens – we miss first. It’s bad that we miss, but it’s good that we react quickly. I will watch the games, our football players who play in Ukraine and abroad. Today everyone will congratulate us, but tomorrow we need to prepare for the Euro. Our job is to look a lot at players, opponents and prepare for the European Championship.”
“The atmosphere in Wroclaw? We felt like we were at home. And I am grateful to the fans that after the missed goal they supported us and helped us. This victory is theirs too.”
The Ukrainian national team beat Iceland in the final of the playoff qualifying for Euro 2024 (2:1). The blue-and-yellows conceded in the first half, but snatched victory thanks to goals from Viktor Tsygankov and Mikhail Mudrik after the break.
Sergei Rebrov’s team will play in the group stage of the 2024 European Championship in a quartet with Belgium, Slovakia and Romania. The Ukrainians will play their first match against Romania on June 17. Ticket sales for the blue-yellow matches at Euro 2024 are also open.
Ukraine will play at the European Championships for the fourth time. The blue-and-yellows have consistently competed in the finals of the continental championship since 2012.
