The Argentine is the only candidate for the position of head coach of the Ukrainian volleyball team
The president Volleyball Federation of Ukraine Mikhail Melnik spoke about the approval of the new coach of the men’s national team of Ukraine, an Argentine Raul Lozano. The candidacy of a new mentor must be approved by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. A 37-year-old Pole will help the Argentinean Petr Graban.
“I think this is purely formal, because in the ministry the commission always listens to who the federation recommends. We recommend it. Moreover, as far as I know, there were no more candidates submitted, there were no applications. Let’s hope that we will have something new, that this person will add something.”
“How did you manage to lure him? At this time, he wants to help a country that needs support, he wants to help us from a sports point of view. While the world supports, for its part it wants to support.”
“There were even negotiations that Graban should be the head coach, because he is a Pole – he is closer in mentality, and in terms of money, it would probably be closer. But the factor of doubt played out: will he have enough experience? Because he’s still young. It’s not about how to coach, but how to lead a team – they are all stars, they all know how to play. So the main thing is to be a good communicator.”
The Executive Committee of the Volleyball Federation of Ukraine approved the candidacy of 67-year-old Lozano. The Argentinean will combine work in Ukraine and the Japanese club JT Thunders.
In his position, Lozano will replace Ugis Krastins, who has led the Ukrainian national team since 2017. Under his leadership, the men’s team won and took prizes in the Golden Euroleague and reached the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Championship. Ukrainians failed to qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In May, the Ukrainian national team will compete in the next Golden Euroleague. The blue-yellows will play their first match against Romania on May 18.
