Double world champion figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva answered a question about traveling to the Winter Olympics under the conditions currently proposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
In February 2022, the IOC recommended that sports federations not allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international tournaments. Later, the recommendations were relaxed and in December 2023, IOC head Thomas Bach announced that the organization would allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who passed the selection process for the 2024 Summer Olympics into a status individual neutral. Athletes will be able to perform in Paris without a flag, anthem and other national symbols.
— Would you go to the Winter Olympics in such conditions?
– It’s difficult, I can’t answer the question. We thought 2018 would be tough, then we thought 2020 would be tough, but it turns out it is now. In 2018 we competed under a neutral flag, but it was still “Olympic Athlete from Russia”, everyone understood everything and there was no hot air around. I really don’t know how I would behave. “I have not been an athlete for a long time, I have no idea,” reports the correspondent of , reporting Medvedeva’s words.
Medvedeva is a two-time silver medalist at the 2018 Olympics.
