Former head coach of the Russian national volleyball team Vladimir Alekno said that the decision to lead Zenit St. Petersburg is a risk and challenge for him.
Friday “Zenith” announced the appointment of Alekno as head coach, the contract with the 57-year-old specialist is for two years.
– What is your motivation ?
— I talked about the contract with the manager for five minutes. The club has the ability, the history, the players ready to do what is expected of them. This is the main motivation. Why lie, for me it’s a risk. It’s a confirmation of my career. If nothing changes, they will say they came for money – I don’t want that. I don’t want to come here and be like everyone else, I want to do something. This is a challenge for me,” Alekno said in an interview with the Zenit press service.
Alekno led the Russian national team three times and spent most of his coaching career at Zenit Kazan. Alekno’s last job was with the Iranian national team. In August 2021, the specialist took a break from his career.
