The youth team lost to the Czech Republic in the second round of Euro 2024
Head coach Ukrainian national team U-17 Yuriy Moroz commented on the defeat from Czech Republic (1:3) in the second round European Youth Championship 2024.
“We planned that there was nowhere to retreat, we only needed a victory. I don’t understand what happened. Children’s football, children’s psychology, burned out… The guys did not show all their strength on the field, what they can do. We lost many duels, many individual mistakes, and lost the ball in simple situations.”
“In the episode with the first goal, we didn’t clear the ball, we made a mistake, and gave ourselves this penalty. Then the guys seemed to get together, some things started to happen, something started to happen. But for each game in the final part you need to gather yourself in order to have moral, strong-willed and fighting qualities. On the one hand, reaching the final tournament is already a success, they are great. However, at the championship itself you need to play differently.”
“The performance of our young men in different clubs? Perhaps this is one of the reasons for the failure. You can look for different reasons, but, in my opinion, there was no anger or thirst for victory on the football field. You have to fight on every piece of the field, and in the episode with the third goal, one player beat so many opponents.”
“Everyone is on an equal footing, but there were a few shortcomings here and there. Perhaps they provided a lot of advances and talked about the future. I will say that the guys who made it to the finals are great. But here everyone is already trying, they know how to play football.”

The Ukrainian youth team did not score a single point in two rounds of Euro 2024. In the first match, Moroz’s team lost to Serbia (0:1), and after the defeat from the Czech Republic they practically lost their chance of leaving the group.
In the final round, Ukraine U-17 will play against the hosts of the tournament, the Cypriots. The match will take place on May 26.
