Court dismisses bribery charges against Barcelona

The club’s management was previously accused of corruption in the case of Jose Maria Negreira

The court dismissed the charges against Barcelona in bribery and corrupt practices in the case of the ex-president of the Technical Judicial Committee of Spain Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

Barcelona’s provincial court ruled against previous findings by magistrate Joaquín Aguirre accusing the club of bribery and corruption. Let us recall that, according to Aguirre, Negreira received cash payments from the management of the Catalan club, being “an official in the performance of public duties.”

Let us recall that back in March 2023, the Spanish prosecutor’s office officially brought charges against former Blaugranas presidents Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu, as well as the main person involved in the case, ex-president of the Technical Judicial Committee Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira. The charges include falsification of documents, corruption in sports between individuals, and bias of referees.

Bartomeu was Barcelona president from 2014-20. In the spring of 2021, he was detained amid corruption charges. Former Blaugranas forward Neymar was also involved in the fraud case.

In July 2023, UEFA allowed Barcelona to participate in the new European Cup season, with the amendment that the investigation against it could be resumed at any time “at the request of the relevant authorities.”
