Courtois: I’m sorry that Lunin won’t be able to play in the final

Ukrainian suffered from flu this week

Belgian Thibaut Courtois supported his Real Madrid goalkeeping partner Andrei Lunin, who will miss the match with Borussia D in the Champions League final due to illness.

“It’s great for me that I can play in the Champions League final, but I’m very sorry for Lunin.”

Lunin suffered from the flu, which is why he missed several training sessions in the Blancos camp. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti announced that Thibault would be in the starting lineup.

The 25-year-old Ukrainian was also under no illusions about his chances against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, saying: “I’m very sad that I can’t prepare with the team for the most important match of my life.”

As it became known on May 29, the Blancos coaching staff decided that the Ukrainian would fly to the capital of England separately from the rest of the team. This is how Madrid want to avoid potential infection among players.

The Ukrainian has played 31 matches for Madrid in all tournaments this season. Andrey conceded 32 goals in them and played 12 matches to zero. Courtois has only recently recovered from two serious injuries in a row, having managed to play only four league matches for Los Blancos (all to zero).

Even before Lunin’s illness, it was reported that Ancelotti intended to play Courtois in the final match of the Champions League. Club president Florentino Perez also believed that the Blancos squad would be more balanced with the Belgian in goal.

Real Madrid became champions of Spain 2024 and reached the Champions League final. The decisive match of the main European Cup with Borussia D will take place today, June 1, at Wembley in London. Starts at 22:00 Kyiv time. The game will be officiated by a team of referees led by Slovenian Slavko Vincic.
