Head coach Romanian national team Edward Jordanescu summed up the extremely successful match for his team against Ukrainian national team in the first round European Championship 2024.
“We knew that Ukraine has a lot of quality football players. They showed a historic result, reaching the quarterfinals at the last Euro. They have a great coach, the players play for top-class clubs. We were prepared for a tough game, but we prepared well and won a victory that no one can say anything against.”

“I can’t compare the level of desire between us and Ukraine. I can only say that our players entered the match with big hearts. We gave it our all 100%. Sometimes we may not play our best, but [против Украины] showed the maximum.”
Let us remind you that Romania unexpectedly defeated Ukraine (3:0) and topped Group E. At least the first goal was the result of an obvious mistake by the opponent – Andrei Lunin knocked the ball onto someone else, and the result of the episode was a beautiful goal by Nicolae Stanciu, who was later recognized by UEFA as Player of the Match. The third goal took place against the backdrop of an inexplicable failure of the Ukrainian defense during a corner kick by the Romanians.
In the second round, Ukraine will play against Slovakia on June 21. Romania will face Belgium the next day. On June 26 of the stage, Sergei Rebrov’s team will meet with Belgium, and Jordanescu’s team will meet with Slovakia.
