Ukrainian fencer Elena Krivitskaya refused to shake hands with Maya Guchmazova of Georgia after a bout at the European Fencing Championships.
The tournament takes place in Switzerland. The match ended with Krivitskaya’s victory with a score of 15:9. After the fight, the Ukrainian left the scene, ignoring the handshake with her opponent, which greatly irritated Guchmazova, who expressed her displeasure using obscene language.
– Why do they behave this way? Why can they do everything? – said Guchmazova in Russian.
Guchmazova was born in Vladikavkaz and has represented Georgia since 2017. Krivitskaya is from the Yaroslavl region.
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) last year abolished the clause in its regulations requiring fencers to shake hands at the end of a match. This decision was made against the backdrop of Ukrainian Olga Kharlan’s refusal to shake hands with Russian Anna Smirnova after her fight at the World Championships.
