Senators in the US Congress, in an official letter, demanded from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) a response in the case of Chinese swimmers and concrete evidence that the organization would guarantee fair competition at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The message was posted on the website of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
On April 21, the New York Times published an article stating that trimetazidine was found in the samples of 23 Chinese swimmers ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. According to the publication, the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) conducted its own investigation, as a result of which the party adhered to the version that the substance entered the athletes’ bodies unintentionally and in small quantities. At the same time, the authors of the material accused WADA of ignoring the data of informants, as well as inconsistency in considering various doping cases.
The United States is concerned about the upcoming competition with the same swimmers from the Chinese team at the Paris Olympics, given the history of trimetazidine doping at the Tokyo Games. The letter, signed by Senators Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz, demands that WADA provide all documents received from China in this matter, as well as minutes of all meetings related to the incident since 2019.
— WADA’s decision to accept CHINADA’s findings stands in stark contrast to its decision to challenge RUSADA’s acquittal in the figure skater’s case. [Валиевой]which is six months later [дела китайских пловцов] also tested positive for trimetazidine due to “food/environmental contamination.” Ultimately, the Russian figure skater was suspended for four years and her results at the 2022 Olympics were annulled. Meanwhile, many of the Chinese swimmers who tested positive for trimetazidine before the 2021 Games are expected to compete in Paris this summer.
Athletes are rightly concerned about fair competition at the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is extremely important that WADA does everything possible to ensure fair competition,” the letter said.
The senators’ statement was supported by USADA head Travis Tygart.
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.
