Southgate resigns as England manager

Three Lions lose to Spain in Euro 2024 final

Gareth Southgate resigned as head coach of the national team England.

“After 102 matches and almost eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate has announced he is stepping down as manager of the Three Lions,” the England team said on social media.

Southgate has managed the England national football team since 2016. However, his team lost to Belgium in the third-place match at the 2018 World Cup and were eliminated in the quarter-finals at the 2020 World Cup.

At Euro 2024, the coach became the third coach in the history of the European Championships to lead his team to two consecutive finals.

Under Southgate, the English national team reached the finals of the European Championship in 2020 and 2024, but suffered fiascos in both tournaments. At Euro 2024, England lost to Spain with a score of 1:2.
