Bologna’s coach believes his team created many chances against Shakhtar and, despite the draw, is pleased with the club’s historic debut
Head coach Bologna Vincenzo Italiano gave a commentary on the results of the home draw against Miner (0:0) in the 1st round Champions League 2024/25.
“We had a lot of chances, we played our game, we knew we could play it and we played it. But in the last meters we have to improve because we created a lot of situations in their area.”
“We continue to perform; it’s a shame we didn’t win. The boys are sorry because they know we could have won at home. It’s a good debut for us in the Champions League, this team creates opportunities and they just need to learn to take them better.”
Let us recall that Bologna debuted in the Champions League with a home match against the Ukrainian champion. In the very debut, Shakhtar missed a penalty. The hosts responded with two excellent moments at the junction of the halves, but both times goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk played flawlessly.
Bologna achieved historic progress for itself – getting into the main European Cup – at the end of last season under the leadership of another coach – Thiago Motta, who left for a promotion to Juventus in the summer. Italiano, in turn, came from Fiorentina, which he led to the Conference League final twice in a row.
Bologna last played in the Champions League’s predecessor, the European Champions Cup, 60 years ago, in the autumn of 1964.
The Rossoblu League’s next round will see them play away against Liverpool on October 2.
