WADA demands that the Italian be suspended for a period of one to two years
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) decided to appeal the decision of the independent tribunal of the International Agency in the case of the first racket of the world Jannik Sinner.
“WADA considers that the finding of “no fault or negligence” is not in accordance with the current rules. WADA is seeking a suspension of one to two years. WADA does not require the annulment of any results other than those already ordered by the trial court. As this matter is pending before CAS, WADA will not provide any further comment at this time,” the agency said in a statement.
Let us remember that the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) previously reported that Sinner escaped disqualification after two positive doping tests that showed traces of the anabolic steroid Clostebol. The doping samples taken turned out to be positive during the Indian Wells tournament in March 2024.
A statement issued on behalf of Jannik Sinner said that the banned substance entered the athlete’s body due to the physiotherapist. The specialist used an over-the-counter (in Italy) product containing clostebol to treat a cut on his finger. After the doping scandal, Yannick fired his fitness trainer Umberto Ferrara and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi.
The statement noted that the physiotherapist performed the massage without wearing gloves, which, combined with various skin lesions on the tennis player’s body, led to unintentional infection. It is noted that neither the physiotherapist nor Sinner knew about the presence of clostebol in the spray.
There was a thorough investigation by ITIA, including numerous in-depth interviews with Sinner and his team, all of whom fully cooperated in this process. Following this investigation, and in accordance with an independent scientific opinion, the ITIA accepted the player’s explanation regarding the source of the clostebol found in his sample and that the violation was not intentional.
Sinner has been leading the world rankings since the beginning of June. The Italian was the first to qualify for the ATP Finals, which will be held in Turin in November.
