CAS rejects Barcelona’s claim against Zenit over bonus payments for Malcolm’s transfer

The blue garnets demanded an additional 490 thousand euros for the St. Petersburg club to reach the group stage of the Champions League

Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne rejected the claim Barcelona To Zenit regarding bonus payments in the amount of 490 thousand euros for the transfer of the winger Malcolm.

The blue garnets sold the Brazilian to the St. Petersburg club in 2019. The contract included a clause requiring payments every time Zenit reached the group stage of the Champions League. Also, the Brazilian must play at least half of his matches in the Russian top division.

Zenit claimed in 2023 that FIFA had exempted it from bonus payments because Russian clubs had been banned from all international competitions since 2022 due to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Barcelona filed a claim with the Arbitration Court, which rejected the Catalans’ claims.

Malcolm received a Russian passport in February 2023. This did not stop him from playing two friendly matches for the first Brazilian national team in June 2023. The winger subsequently moved to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal for €60 million.

In the early hours of February 24, 2022, Russia launched rocket and air strikes on most Ukrainian cities and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The Russian war against Ukraine has continued for the 960th day.
