European leagues and FIFPRO Europe to file joint complaint against FIFA’s international calendar

The case will be considered by the antimonopoly authorities of the European Union

Organization European Leagues (EL) and the players’ union FIFPRO Europe will file a joint complaint against the international calendar FIFA to the antitrust authorities of the European Union.

Players and federations are complaining about the large number of matches, which has increased the workload on players too much. The organizations argue that FIFA is abusing its monopoly power by imposing an overbooked calendar.

Earlier, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin agreed with the statement that the current calendar of European clubs is overloaded. However, he said that teams and players with the highest salaries are complaining about this.

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti criticized the oversaturated calendar of modern football. Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne also expressed dissatisfaction with the increase in the playing season.

In 2026, the World Championship will be held for the first time with an expanded composition of 48 participating teams. The tournament will last for a record long time – from June 11 to July 19.
