European leagues and FIFPRO lodge a complaint against the FIFA international calendar

The complaint is related to the imposition of the international match calendar, including the 2026 World Cup and decisions regarding the 2025 World Cup

Organization European leagues (EL), FIFPRO Europe (International Federation of Professional Footballers’ Associations) and the Spanish La Liga filed a complaint against FIFA international calendar.

The complaint to the European Commission over the match calendar explains that the conflict of interest between FIFA, as the organizer of the competition, and the governing body violates European Union antitrust laws.

The complaint also states that the overcrowded international football calendar jeopardizes the safety and well-being of players and threatens the economic and social sustainability of important national competitions that fans in Europe and around the world have enjoyed for generations.

The complaint also states that a busy international fixture calendar is being imposed on clubs and national teams, including decisions related to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Earlier, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin agreed with the statement that the current calendar of European clubs is overloaded. However, he said that teams and players with the highest salaries are complaining about this.

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti criticized the oversaturated calendar of modern football. Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne also expressed dissatisfaction with the increase in the playing season.

Let us remind you that in 2025 the Club World Championship will be held for the first time in the summer, from June 15 to July 13. It will be attended by 32 clubs from six different confederations (CAF, AFC, CONMEBOL, CONCACAF, UEFA, OFC)

In 2026, the World Championship will be held for the first time with an expanded composition of 48 participating teams. The tournament will last for a record long time – from June 11 to July 19.
