Maguchikh: People abroad are tired of the war and Ukrainians

Yaroslava admits that she often talks about the problems of Ukraine

Ukrainian athlete, Olympic champion Yaroslav Maguchikh spoke about situations abroad, where she has to explain to people the situation in Ukraine and the need to support her country during the war with the Russian Federation.

“When you more or less communicate with locals abroad, you already feel that some people are tired of this war, of the Ukrainians. And you often catch yourself thinking that there are so many of them. But I try to remind them that “Kamon, we are fighting for our independence, for your peace in Europe.” Because if we lose, then the whole world loses, and the Russians will come to kill you.”

“Two years ago I had such a case in Germany. They said then that Ukraine needed to give up parts of the territory and it would be much easier. I came to the service station to inspect the car. And at the service they asked me, why don’t you give them these territories and the whole war will end? I am beginning to realize that the war will not end. The Russians started it back in 2014, occupied Crimea, part of the Donetsk region and Lugansk region. And now they continue to fight. And then they will come again. Just fucking basic stuff.”

“Communication with rivals? Yes, of course, they supported me at the beginning of the war, when they wrote to me in private messages. Then on the path, when I already saw them. Patterson and I were then at the World Indoor Championships. She then did a manicure in the colors of our flag – it was very nice. And now such warm relations and support continue.”

This year has become outstanding for Yaroslava in terms of sporting achievements. On July 7, Maguchikh broke the world high jump record, which had stood since 1987 – the Ukrainian cleared a height of 2.10 m at the Diamond League stage in Paris. Yaroslava later won gold at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Maguchys’ last competition in the 2024 season was the 2024 Diamond League final in Brussels. Yaroslava won in Belgium, and another Ukrainian, Irina Gerashchenko, took bronze. Maguchikh won the Diamond League final for the third year in a row.

The Olympic champion in high jump was recognized as the best athlete in Ukraine based on the results of June, August and September. Maguchikh also entered the top 3 contenders for the title of best European track and field athlete in 2024.

Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia launched rocket and air bombardments of most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The Russian war against Ukraine has continued for the 966th day.
