Harlan: I want to found my own fencing academy in Kyiv

The Olympic champion wants to first implement a project in Ukraine before going international

Two-time Olympic champion in fencing Olga Kharlan said that she wants to found her own fencing school.

“Let’s put it this way: I’m starting to live a slightly different life. I want to found my own fencing academy. I am currently working in this direction, it is not an easy path. This is a different path, it is the most difficult for me now, because, nevertheless, fencing for me, be that as it may, is very easy. Because I know how to do it.”

“But still I would really like to, this is my dream. Secondly, I would like to give the younger generation a greater understanding of what fencing is. Moreover, in this time that we have now, I think that not only children, but also teenagers and adults would have a great time doing it. And this is very important, it motivates us for the future, it is a contribution to our future.”

“Moreover, over all these years I have seen a lot in fencing and sports. I can’t say that I know a lot, that I know everything. But I have my own opinion, which I would like to see started in Ukraine, in Kyiv, or maybe later in other regions of our country.”

“I really want to do this first in Kyiv, in Ukraine. This, of course, is my principled position. Because many people ask, maybe in Italy, where I spend a lot of time. I say no. Only here.”

Harlan won gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris in the women’s team saber tournament. Olga defeated her opponent in the decisive bout with a score of 8:2. Harlan set a new Ukrainian record for the number of medals at the Olympic Games (6), and at the same time broke the record for the longest interval between two Olympic gold medals in fencing (16 years).

Previously, the Ukrainian became the champion in the team saber at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and also won silver in the team competition at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. In individual saber, Olga won the Olympic bronze medal three times – in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Paris 2024.
