Three-time La Vuelta winner Roglic retires from Spanish Grand Tour

The Slovenian fell on the 16th stage of the cycle race

Three times champion La Vuelta Primoz Roglic did not start on stage 17 of the Spanish Grand Tour. The Slovenian retired due to injuries sustained after a fall the day before.

Roglic was in second place overall in the Vuelta 2022. At the 16th stage, Primoz made an attempt to make up the gap, but at the very finish he hit another rider, Fred Wright, and fell down.

Examination showed numerous bruises to the right elbow, thigh, knee and ribs of the rider. In the morning, assessing Roglic’s condition, the team decided to withdraw the driver from the competition before the decisive mountain stages.

Previously, Roglic was unable to reach the end of the 2022 Tour de France, having also received numerous injuries after falling on one of the stages. However, the Slovenian helped teammate Jonas Vingegor to overtake the previous winner Tadej Pogacar in the overall standings and win the Big Loop.

After the 16th stage of La Vuelta, the Belgian Remco Evenepul is in the lead. Ukrainian Mark Padun scored almost 40 km solo on the 6th stage. In the overall standings, Padun takes 38th place. La Vuelta 2022 will end on September 11 in Madrid.
