Belgian Evenepoel wins La Vuelta 2022

Spaniard Ayuso is the youngest rider to finish on the Grand Tour podium in the last 118 years

Belgian racing driver Remco Evenepul became the winner of the overall standings of the last grand tour of the season – La Vuelta.

The 22-year-old Quick Step Alpha Vinyl was ahead of Spaniards Enric Mas of Movistar and Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates. Evenepool is the first Belgian in 44 years to win a Grand Tour since Johan De Meynck, who won the 1978 Giro d’Italia.

Note that Ayuso, who will turn 20 on September 16, is the youngest cyclist in 118 years who managed to finish on the podium of the Grand Tour. The Spaniard did it in his debut Vuelta at the same age as the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, later a two-time Tour de France winner.

Evenpool wins the Grand Tour two years after the accident at the Lombardy monument. Due to fractures, the rider subsequently missed more than six months, which affected his debut grand tour, the Giro 2021.

Earlier it was reported that the three-time winner of the Vuelta Primoz Roglic could not finish. The Slovenian, who was in second place in the overall standings, fell on the 16th stage and was unable to continue the race.

Ukrainian Mark Padun ended up finishing 46th at the Vuelta 2022. EF Education rider EasyPost scored almost 40 km solo on stage 6, where he claimed victory.
