Belgium’s Evenepoel wins group road race at World Cycling Championships

Belgian Remco Evenepul won the group race at the World Road Cycling Championships in Wollongong, Australia.

Evenepool covered the distance of 266.9 km in 6 hours 16 minutes and 8 seconds.

Second place was taken by Frenchman Christophe Laporte, he won bronze Michael Matthews from Australia.

For Evenepool, 22, this is the first adult world championship title. Two weeks ago he won the Vuelta in Spain.

One of Wollongong’s World Cup favourites, the Dutchman Matthew van der Pool retired 30 km after the start of the race. Last night he was arrested because of a quarrel with teenagers in a hotel.
