The leader of the Silk Way rally spoke about the tactics of the KAMAZ master for the eighth stage

KAMAZ-master team driver Dmitry Sotnikov After completing the eighth stage of the Silk Way marathon rally, he said that for the first time in his career he had covered 100 kilometres of dunes.

The eighth stage of the Silk Way Rally on the Altai-Altai route ended on Friday in Mongolia. Sotnikov became the leader of the overall standings.

— As we approached the dunes we saw [Сергея] Viazovich, gradually approached him. Already in the sand, they saw that he had some problems. He did not take the dunes everywhere, but went around them. Later he stood in a sand crater, repairing something. Bogdan Karimov was driving behind us, and later Eduard Nikolaev and Andrey Karginov came to join us. This was the tactic: to gather four of us and safely cross the dunes.

The sand was difficult. On the horizon we could already see the exit of the dunes and the mountains, then the route turned right – and there again endless dunes! It was a great experience for us, we enjoyed it. The only problem is that the dunes are not soft everywhere, “says Sotnikov, a correspondent for .

Andrey Karginov, the chief driver of KAMAZ, noted that 100 kilometers of dunes in a row became a record for him.

— It’s a difficult day, we were preparing for it. We understood that our leading guys had little time. We built our tactics in such a way as to win back our opponents as much as possible and to cross the dunes together. Today we started fourth, waited for Eduard Nikolaev’s crew and assured them all the way.

This day will be remembered for a long time, 100 kilometers of dunes in a row is a record, it has never happened before. Usually, the organizers give dunes for 15-20 kilometers, then a plateau for rest, then dunes again. Very beautiful landscapes in Mongolia. Huge dunes, not very complex: large hilly and steep slopes. Somewhere the car seemed heavy. But we covered the difficult route in single file with four KAMAZ vehicles, “said Karginov.

The Silk Road Rally crosses Russia and Mongolia and ends on July 15 in Ulaanbaatar. The total length of the race is 5,243 km, the length of the special stages is 2,992 km.
